Abstract: Using only the field equations, the total energy equation for slightly damped linear waves in a fully ionized plasma is derived. In addition to the electromagnetic energy and Poynting vector, this equation contains energy and energy flux terms arising from the coherent response of the plasma to the wave fields. By performing an e:xpansion of the particle energy equations about the undamped condition, expressions are obtained these terms containing well defined particle functions. The coherent energy consists of both a hydrodynamic and a thermal contribution and the coherent flux involves the transport of thermal energy by perturbation and diffusion currents as well as viscous terms.
